VIKTORIA

Bulgaria/Romania, 2014, dir. Maya Vitkova

Boryana longs to flee Communist Bulgaria and escape to the West. Her desire is thwarted however by the birth of her daughter Viktoria. This unwanted pregnancy causes the lack of an umbilical cord and, born without a belly button, Viktoria is hailed as a living symbol of the Communist party. The debut feature by Bulgarian director Maya Vitkova, Viktoria is a darkly comic absurdist epic that plays out against a highly fragile and unstable background, as both familial and political terrain shift under the characters’ feet.

The screening will be introduced by Teodosia Dobriyanova.
