Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day (18*)
Croatian director Ivona Juka revisits history with a daring tale about the persecution of the gay community in Tito’s Yugoslavia.
In 1957, a group of filmmakers, once partisans during the Second World War, are in the midst of shooting the final scene of their film. In it, a disillusioned soldier decides to cross the border and leave his country for Italy.
Unfortunately for the filmmakers, a member of Yugoslavia’s censoring board walks on set and protests the scene’s inclusion in the film. But the censorship is a targeted persecution of the filmmakers’ sexuality, and a communist party loyalist is soon hired to sabotage their lives and careers.
The film was inspired by the story of the director’s relative, and is partially set on the infamous forced labour camp of Barren Island.
Selected as Croatia’s entry for this year’s Academy Awards, Juka’s second feature film is a stark, sometimes disturbing tale about preserving humanity even in the most dehumanising circumstances.
